About Lane House

Located just 1.5 hours from Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, the Inn at Historic Lane House provides a unique and opulent escape in the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. The Federal mansion features five large guest rooms fitted with luxurious bedding, a full breakfast featuring local foods, historic grounds including a thermal pool, as well as antique and original furnishings related to America’s iconic 15th First Lady, Harriet Lane. Nearby skiing, golfing, hiking, historic sites, and local shops await you. We’re thrilled to soon unveil this 200 year old National Landmark for the very first time.

AMERICA’S FIRST, FIRST LADY

When Harriet Lane became an orphan at the age of 10, she never imagined that she would one day become the most famous woman in America. Adopted by her lifelong bachelor uncle, James Buchanan, Harriet would later serve as his official ambassadorial consort overseas and as mistress of the White House during his presidency, being the first person ever to be given the title of First Lady of the United States. Renowned for her beauty and charm, Harriet transformed the White House into a respected institution of art, culture, and diplomacy. A lifelong philanthropist, she advocated for the welfare of Indigenous peoples, laid the foundation for the National Gallery of Art, and opened the nation’s first children's hospital, running to this day as Johns Hopkins.

In honor of Harriet Lane’s generous spirit, a portion of the proceeds from every reservation will be donated to charity.
